1977. Name mentioned: No.136 Mrs. M. Segesman.

East Melbourne, Simpson Street 054, 056, Liege Apartments

Description: 

Notable features include unpainted decorative brickwork. A three storey block of flats incorporating a number of understated Moderne details into an inexpensive and otherwise generic design.

History: 

I.G. Anderson was commissioned to build this block of apartments by Liege Investments Pty Ltd, a company which had applied for registration less than a week before the building application was lodged on 12 August 1940. This was the same day the building application was lodged for 29 Hotham Street, also by Anderson.

East Melbourne, Simpson Street 181, 183

Description: 

A pair of single storey terrace houses, 181 has added dormer window.

History: 

183 Simpson Street This is one of a pair, 181 Simpson Street being identical. They were built about 1881, possibly earlier. The large attic is a feature which is not often seen. The passage is also somewhat wider than is usually found in a single storey terrace house. The owner in 1881 was John Snow. From 1888-1899 it was owned by William Sweet.

There may have been two No.12's originally. No.12a first appears in 1869 - may have been built on Anderson's stable site. (Refer 1894 MMBW plan). No.12a became No.60, No.14 to No.62 and No.16 to No.66? (should probably be No.64).
1852. Lot 15, Section 1 purchased by Solomon Benjamin.
1853. MCC BR: Wm. Anderson - builder, for self two houses and stables. (1854c-1893c).

East Melbourne, Victoria Parade 458, Dorijo

Description: 

A three storey building of rendered brick containing 12 apartments in the Art Deco style. As it faces Victoria Parade it is a symmetrical building with the main entrance at the ground floor level of the central element, and above French doors opening onto balconies. The balconies diminish in width as they progress up the building giving a sense of increased height.

History: 

History: Rupert Stanley Joseph, auctioneer, became the registered owner of the land now known as 458 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne, in 1919 (Certificate of Title Vol 4196 Fol 131). In 1932, aged in his mid-50s and by then calling himself an investor, he married Doris Lilian Meinardi (Ancestry).

Illustrated panel prepared by volunteers from the East Melbourne Historical Society as part of an exhibition,For King and Country, commemorating the centenary of the commencement of the First World War. It is one of 16 panels, each of which provides a life story, with relevant images, of men and women who served in the war and who had connection with East Melbourne or Jolimont.
