Certain Admissions - book review
A review of the book, Certain Amissions, by Gideon Haigh. The book tells the story of John Bryan Kerr who was gaoled for the murder by strangulation of his girl friend. The author revisits the case and casts some doubt on the verdict. John Bryan Kerr was the son of Donald Wallace Kerr, one of East Melbourne's WW1 soldiers, see link below.

East Melbourne, Darling Street 028, The Workshop
Workshop
First listed in the Rate Books as a workshop but by 1895 the useage had changed to stables. James Peel Browne owned the building until his death in 1905. Sometime after 1910 it became the Commonwealth Motor Garage with Adams and Bradstreet as proprietors.
East Melbourne, Gipps Street 144, Fanecourt
Large red brick house with central carriage way.
Mitchell's four daughters, along with their cousin, Maie Ryan (later Lady Casey) were educated by private governess in Fanecourt's school room. Four of the five became writers. The Mitchell family sold Fanecourt in 1913 and later it was divided into eight flats and renamed Torrington.
East Melbourne, Hotham Street 045, 047, 049, 051. Anerley Terrace
This is a fine early Victorian render on masonry terrace of four residences with two storey verandahs and a central cartouche to the parapet. The verandahs have a simple cast iron balustrade and timber 'wave' design fretwork frieze similar to 125 Hotham Street. There is a sparing use of render decoration to the parapet party walls and chimneys. There is intact rear w.c. at No. 49.
Anerley Terrace was built in two sections. The first two houses were built in 1866 and the second two in 1868. The houses were built for Joseph Wilmoth who one reference gives as a law stationer, otherwise his occupation is only ever listed as gentleman. He was a dedicated churchman serving as secretary of The Richmond Young Men's Christian Association, and later as secretary

1854. Thos. Crawson to build for Geo. S.L. Robinson (first owner) 'Clarence Cottage' - 3 room iron house. Also: Alex McLaren to build brick cottage and additions.
1855. Richard Fitzgerald for T. Robinson a kitchen. Christy Esq of Queen Street - architect.
1861. Robinson - owner. Henry Torrens Moore - occupier to 1862. Large brick 2-storey.

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 099, Halloween
Symmetrical, two storey, double fronted house with replacement verandah and balcony
In a Notice of Intent to Build dated 14 March, 1854 George Robinson gave notice of his intention to have builder, Thomas Crawson, erect a three room iron cottage. Robinson gave his address as Clarence Cottage, Fitzroy (Hotham) Street, and in the 1854 Rate Books a four room brick cottage appears under his name. This would indicate that the brick cottage pre-dates the iron one.
Firefighter's funeral 1968
On the 2 March 1968 a grass fire broke out in Alphington, near Melbourne. Two fireman, Sub-Station Officer Gordon Bruce Adams, and Senior Fireman Eric Jamieson, suffered severe burns. Both later died in hospital. Jamieson on 3 March and Adams on 23 March.
