140 Simpson Street sold after 57 years

Newspaper clipping reporting on the sale of 14o Simpson Street, East Melbourne.  The vendor, Mrs Kathleen Joan Brosnan, had owned the property for 57 years to the day.

Also so sold was 8/98 Vale Street, East Melbourne

Brochure advertising the auction of 164 Hotham Street, East Melbourne, scheduled for 20 July 1991.

The brochure incorrectly refers to the house as part of Cyprus Terrace, correctly it is Cypress Terrace.

East Melbourne, Berry Street 051, 053, 055, 057

Description: 

A row of four two storey rendered terraces with intact 2 storey cast iron verandah and cast iron palisade fence. Each end dwelling has a broken parapet to the pediment and a bay window to the ground floor. The entire terrace has a heavily bracketed cornice and party walls are decorated with ashlar render quoins. Stone steps and tessellated tile verandahs and rear w.c.s are intact.

History: 

This terrace of four houses was designed by Wight and Lucas for William McLean and built by Peirson and Wright.  It was completed in 1890.

East Melbourne, Berry Street 28, 30, 32

Description: 

Group of 3 late 19th century ruled render terraces with simple render embellishments. The terrace is designed to be symmetrical about the centre with parapet details and cast iron balcony panels to the side terraces varying from the centre terrace. [i-Heritage database]

History: 

These three houses were built for Hirsch Fink by Michael Kelly.  The architect’s name is given simply as Beatty and has so far been unidentified. The name may refer to John Beatty who was a builder or contractor and was at the time the houses were built, mayor of Prahran.

Photo of Fitzroy Terrace, Clarendon Street, East Melbourne shortly before it was demolished to make way for the Mercy Maternity Hospital, which has now become apartments known as 150 Clarendon Street.

A photographic postcard published by Valentine's. V58

It shows four brick terrace houses. They were built in 1908-1910 for Sir Austin Chapman (1864-1926). In the 1950s the two on the right, nos 64-66, were modernised and given new facades of concrete breeze blocks.  These same two were demolished in the 1980s to make way for apartments. Now only the two on the left remain.

The property was passed in on a vendor's bid of $2.3 million and later sold for $2.65.

Sales brochure for 205 George Street, East Melbourne.  The house was to be sold mid-renovation.  Permits had been obtained and permitted demolition taken place, but no building work yet started.  

The brochure contains proposed plans only.
