Description: 

A large two storey cement rendered house in the Italianate style.

History: 

Pre-history: Before Crathre House was built there was another house on the site - a large wooden house known as The Bungalow. This house was owned by Henry Dyer as an investment property. He lived next door at 121 Powlett Street with his wife, Mary, and their children. He owned many other properties in the immediate vicinity.

1862c. First Directory entry: John Omand, cabinet maker. In 1867 he was a partner in firm: Omand and Miller, corn factors of 60 Bridge Road, Richmond.
1862-91. Name mentioned: John Omand.
1892-1909. Alexander Swinton. During this time, 1902, house was rebuilt.
1902. MCC BR: R. McDonald, builder, for A. Swinton a 2-storey house. J.O. Muir - architect.

East Melbourne, Simpson Street 018

Description: 

A single two storey house built in the style of a terrace house. The balcony and verandah are not original.

History: 

18 Simpson Street was built in 1874 by C C Fewster for Peter White, plumber. Peter White was born in Edinburgh and arrived in Melbourne in 1858 along with his wife, Alison, and their four eldest children.  The couple went on to have another eight children.
