Photograph of Darling Square taken by John Henry Harvey in 1916. Simpson Street is to the right, Gipps Street in the background. Queens Bess Row can be discerned in the distance through the winter's mist. A large birds nest can be seen in one of the bare elm trees.

East Melbourne, Simpson Street 078

Description: 

Single storey, double fronted bluestone cottage. The veranda is not original.

History: 

The house was built in 1859 for Robert Sperring. He added a kitchen in 1862, and then, using builder, Josiah Messiter, he added a veranda in 1864. N.K. (Norman Kinamond) Harvey lived in the house as a child and later wrote of his memories:

Holy Trinity interior

Photo of interior of Holy Trinity Church, East Melbourne The church was completed in 1906. According to Laurence Moore, church warden and organist at Holy Trinity, the organ currently in the church was installed in 1913 replacing the one shown in the photo which was on loan. These two dates set the limits for the photo as 1906-1913.

Scanned glass transparency of the old Treasury Building taken by John Henry Harvey. The date is unknown but the format of this picture and the nature of Spring Street suggest that it was taken in the earlier phase of John Henry Harvey's creative work, possibly during the 1890s.
