Cliveden, 192 Wellington Parade, East Melbourne - 1887

Scanned copy of wood engraving of proposed residence of Sir W.J. Clarke on the corner of Wellington Parade and Clarendon Streets, East Melbourne. The building is described as "Italian Renaissance style, large private residence on corner of Clarendon St. and Wellington Pde; Mr. S. Armstrong, builder; Messrs. Wardell and Vernon, architects."

East Melbourne, Powlett Street 140, 142 - Burchett

1867c. Name mentioned: G.A. Badger.
1868. Badger - owner and occupier of one house. The other occupier: Robert Johnston.
1870. Badger - owner. Occupiers: Palmer and C. Armstrong.
1974. Name mentioned: Dr. Barham.
Note: 'Old Court' named by Cody? Maker of 'Old Court' whiskey.

East Melbourne, Simpson Street 171, 173

Description: 

A pair of single fronted, single storey cottages.  No 171 has been painted but appears to have retained its original iron frieze.  The fence is also original with iron pickets and impressive gate posts relative to the size of the house.  No 173 has retained its original, unpainted brickwork but has modern frieze and fence.

History: 

These two houses were built in 1870 by James Harper for John Dillon Armstrong, carpenter, cabinet maker and lastly, gentleman. They were known as David’s Cottages, named for John Armstrong’s son.

East Melbourne, Wellington Parade 192-198, Cliveden

Description: 

Large three storeyed house of 100 rooms.

History: 

Cliveden was built for Sir William J. Clarke, landholder and MLC. The Illustrated Australian News 5 March 1887, proclaimed the house to be "One of the largest private residences erected in the Colony". It included 28 bedrooms, five bathrooms and 17 servants' bedrooms, and a ballroom 100 ft by 50 ft.

1857. MCC Building Advice: To build the foundations of some houses for the Hon. J.F. Palmer (signed: James Bonham).
1863. Henry Langlands, pioneer, ironfounder and politician died here (at No.1). Widow lived on - see A.D.B. Vol.2.
