Description: 

One of a pair of terrace houses.

History: 

109 and 111 Hotham Street replaced a cottage built for the same owner, Henry Bridger, in 1854.

1866. Charles Hetherington - owner/occupier. Brick, 6 rooms. John Bruce - owner/occupier. Brick, 6 rooms.

Jolimont, Jolimont Terrace 28, Bromo House

Description: 

One of a pair of 2 storey ruled render terraces with quoins to corners and plain moulded string course to parapet. The timber fretwork single storey verandah is believed to be the original form. The stables to the rear are noteworthy. [from i-Heritage Database]

History: 

One of a pair of houses built at the same time by the same builder but for different owners. This house was built for John Munro Bruce, father of Stanley Melbourne Bruce. He married, at the house, his wife, Mary Ann Henderson in 1872, and remained there through the birth of their first child the following year, but then moved to St. Kilda.

Mary Grant Bruce

1 x A3 page being photocopy of newspaper article on the life of Mary Grant Bruce entitled, The story of the billabong lady'.
Note: Mary Grant Bruce was married at Holy Trinity Church, East Melbourne in 1914 and is reputed to have lived with her former teacher, Miss Estelle Beausire, at 111 Hotham Street, East Melbourne, c.1900.

Sitting front row left is Yatala Bruce (1894-1962).  She was the daughter of John Vans Agnew Bruce and Sarah Grace nee Wayman.  The family lived at 5 Palmer Street, Jolimont. In 1921 Yatala (Yattie) married George Edward Ovenden and the couple thereafter lived at 94 George Street, East Melbourne.
