Yarra River

1856 - The punt at Punt Road

A photograph of the punt at Punt Road Richmond taken in 1856. The punt for horses and carriages is on the far (south) bank. There are several small punts for pedestrians on the north bank awaiting business. On the south side of the river Punt Road rises sharply with cultivated land on both sides. There is a large house on the east and several small wooden buildings.

Bridge hits troubled waters

Newspaper clipping about delays to the upgrading of Swan Street Bridge. The work will provide an extra east bound lane and wider footpaths. The delay is said to be due to inaccurate original drawings.

Ferries on the Yarra

Ferries on the Yarra by Colin Jones tells the story of ferry travel on the Yarra from the earliest days of white settlement and covers the stretch of river from Studley Park to the Docks. Many of the ferries travelled along the East Melbourne section of the river and Brander's Ferry, in particular, provided river crossings before the advent of the Swan Street Bridge.

Melbourne from the Yarra. Shows the river in the foreground with a ferry and passengers leaving the landing. In the distance is the city dominated by the spires of the Independent Church and Scots Church. Possibly the area now knows as Birrarung Marr.

Swan St fix might be new footbridge

Newspaper clipping about plans to create another car lane and build a new pedestrian footpath on the Swan Street Bridge.

The article also refers to an upgrade of Hoddle Street which will involve the creation of 'continuous flow' intersections.
