East Melbourne, Gipps Street 083

Description: 

Federation style double-fronted villa with terracotta tile roof and timber verandah.

History: 

According to Winston Burchett’s Index to the City of Melbourne’s Notices of Intentions to Build 83 Gipps Street was built 1909-10 for John Loughnan by John Timmins to the design of architects, Crook and Richardson.

East Melbourne, Punt Road 1035, 1037, 1039

Description: 

Three terrace houses built in a stepped arrangement to accomodate the steep slope of the site.

History: 

The first house on this allotment was a remnant of the old Mounted Police Barracks.  It and the hospital, which became the Berry Street Babies’ Home, were the only two buildings to remain after all the others were cleared in preparation for the subdivision and sale of the site in 1881.

Sketch plans of the Richmond Mounted Police Barracks made in preparation for the building of a new police hospital.

The Barracks were on the site of the residential area now bounded by Wellington Parade, Vale Street and Hoddle Street. The Barracks were decommissioned in 1881, when the site was subdivided and sold to private buyers.

Simpson Street intersection

Photo shows the intersection of Simpson Street and Wellington Parade, East Melbourne. Across Wellington Parade is Vale Street.  On the left hand corner of Vale Street is a modern building constructed as an extension to St Ives Hospital behind.  It has now been demolished and the old house has been restored as a private residence.
