Description: 

Pair of two storey, single fronted brick houses. They no longer match due to alterations

History: 

Joseph Broadbent, clerk of works, owned the two houses until his death in 1879. During this time he made considerable alterations to both of them. In 1861 Number 69 appeared as a four roomed house, the following year it increased to five rooms and increased again in 1874 to nine rooms. In the same year Number 71 had one room added to become six rooms. In 1880 the houses became the property of his daughter, Ann Atchison and her husband,James Dale Atchison, as his wife, Elizabeth had pre-deceased him. He kept Number 69 at nine rooms but added a seventh room to Number 71 in 1888.

Past occupants of Number 69: 1859 Samuel Broadbent, owner (no information has been found on Samuel Broadbent and his relationship with Joseph Broadbent is unknown) 1859-1870 Joseph Broadbent, owner 1872-1873 John Johnson 1874-1879 John Russell 1880-1884 James Dale Atchison, owner. Variously described as a timber merchant or a leather merchant. 1886-1890+ Mrs. Jacobs or Henry Jacobs, chemist Past occupants of Number 71 1859-1869 various 1870-1873 James Dale Atchison 1878-1882 Mrs. Harvey 1883-1887 Mrs. Fairbairn 1888-1890 A. McKellar
