East Melbourne, Albert Street 118

Description: 

Timber house of five rooms.

History: 

Thomas Wright, the owner and builder of the house, was a contractor who built many houses in the East Melbourne area. He owned the land next door to the west on which he built a pair of houses as investments. He also owned the blocks behind facing Victoria Parade and on these too he built investment properties.

East Melbourne, Albert Street 128, 130

Description: 

A pair of two-storey single fronted houses with cast iron balconies.

History: 

Thomas Wright, who built and owned the houses was a contractor who built many houses in the East Melbourne area. He lived next door and had his workshop behind, on the site now known as 1 Contractors Lane. The houses were built as investment properties and were let. After his death the properties remained in the ownership of his wife at least until 1890.

Architect W T Gore. 18 room mansion overlooking Fitzroy Gardens.
1981 bought by the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists as their headquarters.

East Melbourne, Clarendon Street 162, Belmont

Description: 

Large three-storey house built to the street.

History: 

Belmont was built in 1873 for William Taylor, auctioneer, who lived there for thirty years. He died in 1903 leaving the house to his wife until her death. In later years it became an annexe to the Freemasons' Hospital, but was eventually demolished to create parking space.

Not known

History: 

Initially described in the Rate Books as six rooms, the following year the description changes to five rooms, pantry, bath and shed, and by 1875 it has become seven rooms. Fielding lived in the house until 1883 when he sold to Robert Richardson who added another room. From this time it was leased to the police and was the local police station.

A pair of two storey, single fronted houses of brick and stone, now cement rendered

History: 

Two four roomed houses were built by William McLean to separately accommodate his father, Peter McLean, and father-in-law, Andrew Arnot. The houses were built on, what was at the time, low-lying floodway land, prior to the construction of the Collingwood railway line in 1901.
