Framed pictures

One of 16 views of Melbourne suburbs issued as a pictorial supplement with The Australasian newspaper of 6 April 1872. The pictures were drawn by Thomas Carrington (1842-1918) and engraved by Rudolph Jenny (1827-1905). An article in the newspaper itself lists the viewpoints that each of the scenes was painted from.  The East Melbourne view was 'From Studley-park, near the toll-gate'. Starting from the righthand margin of the sketch can be seen the spire of St Peter's Eastern Hill; St Patrick's Cathedral; St Patrick's College, marked with two small matching towers; Chalmer's Church, once in St Andrew's Place; Parliament House and behind it the Weslyan Church.
