The map shows Richmond subdivided into allotments with names of first purchasers inscribed. To the west of Richmond lies the as yet undeveloped East Melbourne, south of Wellington Parade.  The edge of the Government Paddock is shown. To the south-west of the paddock an arrow points to the location of the Mounted Police Barracks.  This barracks was the first mounted police barracks in Melbourne and was staffed by army personnel seconded from the NSW military regiments. It should not be confused with the second Mounted Police Barracks which was established on the north-east corner of the Government Paddock, now Yarra Park, after Separation.

The original map is in the collection of the Public Record Office of Victoria, in its Historic Plan Collection. Surveyor-General's Department:  VPRS 8168/P5 item SYDNEY, record J3.
