Cliveden Mansions

East Melbourne, Wellington Parade 192, 194, 196, 198 - Burchett

1887. 'Cliveden' built as a home for Hon. W.J. Clarke, Bart, M.L.C. It was one of the most luxurious private mansions in Melbourne, including a ballroom that could accomodate 250 guests.
1914. Converted into 'Cliveden Mansions', suites of luxurious apartments. Tenants included: Sir Justice Duffy and Sir Justice Isaacs.
1968. Demolished for a hotel site.

Gone to War as Sister: Jessie Gemmell - decorated

One of 16 illustrated panels prepared by Janet Scarfe and volunteers from the East Melbourne Historical Society as part of an exhibition, Gone to War as Sister, commemorating the lives and work of the many women who served as nurses in the First World War and had connection with East Melbourne or Jolimont. This panel tells of the life, work and war experiences of Jessie Gemmell.

Knife ex Cliveden

Entree knife with silver plated handle and stainless steel blade. The blade is engraved with the words 'Grosvenor Delphic' written in copperplate style and on an angle to the blade. Across the base of the blade in block letters and over two lines are the words, 'Firth-Brearley Stainless 3' The handle is engraved with the word 'Cliveden' in copperplate style writing.

On 18 August 2021 heritage architect, Bruce Trethowan, followed up on his previous talk on Cliveden as the family home of Sir William and Lady Janet Clarke with the story of its purchase and conversion into luxury apartments, and its new inhabitants. A video of the presentation can be found here.
