East Melbourne, Gipps Street 159 - Burchett

Built in 1862 by Ravenscroft and Oldfield for Eugene von Guerard, painter and director of the National Gallery. 8 storey brick house.
later occupied by Lord and Lady Casey.

East Melbourne, Gipps Street 159, Little Parndon

Description: 

This is an early handmade brick residence of 2 storeys. The facade is simply composed with three bays of exposed brick with a simple brick cornice.

History: 

The house was built for the Austrian born, landscape painter, Eugene von Guerard in 1862. It was initially described in the rate books as having four rooms but von Guerard had an additional three rooms built in 1866. James Dickson was the builder. One of the additional rooms was built as the artist's studio.

First occupants: No.10 Mdme. Ellsasser. No.12 Arthur Anderson. No.14 Mrs. J. Dinwoodie.
1889-90. James F. Born lived at 15 Simpson Street.
1975. Classified National Trust.
1980. National Estate Register.

Description: 

Pair of fine 2 storey render terraces with elaborate 2 storey cast iron verandah and render details. Flat arched openings to first floor and slender Corinthian pilastered openings with radius corners to ground floor. Palisade fence on scalloped bluestone plinth. Tessellated tile floor and bluestone upstands to verandahs are all intact. [i-Heritage]

History: 

This pair of houses was designed by Ravenscroft and Freeman, architects in 1887 and built for James Ford Born by Seccull and Abbot.  George Ravenscroft appears to have been self-taught, starting out as a carpenter, then a contractor, finally an architect. Born named No 13 Simpson Street Lynton, and No 15 Torquay.
