Sturgess

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 183

Description: 

Large two storey painted brick house. The house had been extended at the front during the 1930s including balcony with a solid brick balustrade and brick brackets above.

History: 

During the McFarlands ownership of the house it was variously described in the rate books as nine or ten rooms, sometimes with stabling. During the 1930s it was altered to accommodate flats.

1861. McFarland - owner/occupier. 12 rooms.
Note: Slate roof and chimneys of original house can be seen behind new facade.

1870. MCC BR: Downie and Sturgess to build house for Mr. Bunny.
1871. Henry J. Bunney, owner/occupier. Brick, 8 rooms.
1872-84. Name mentioned: Henry J. Bunney.
1903. MCC BR: T.G. Redmond of 32 Derby Street, Collingwood, applied to build a 'motor car house' for Mr. Darby.
1903. Resident: Mr. S.W.A. Darby.
