East Melbourne, Gipps Street 010

Description: 

Very narrow single fronted two storey house.

History: 

This little house was built as an investment for George Milton. The rate books described it as having six rooms on land eleven feet by sixty-six feet. Roughly ninety years later it was deemed uninhabitable by the Housing Commission on grounds of its size and its ruinous condition and a demolition order was issued.

Built 1878 for James Brown and Sons 2 storey brick house with adjacent stables.
Brown's son married member of Hunt family which continued the business until 1971. Classified by the National Trust - see index card

East Melbourne, Grey Street 042, Nirvana

Description: 

A two-storeyed, single fronted house with a cast iron balcony, in the style of a terrace house.

History: 

The house was built for James Peel Browne, livery stable keeper, cab proprietor and coachbuilder. Adjacent stables housed his horses and cabs. Browne's son, also James Peel Browne, lived with his father, and later so too did his wife, Catherine, and young daughter. Confusingly both father and son died in 1905 and the property fell to Catherine.
