Cumming

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 154 - Burchett

1860. MCC BR: John McIntosh of Nicholson Street to build dwelling house For James Cumming, a surgeon dentist of 67 Swanston Street.
1861. James Cumming - owner/occupier.
1883. Cumming sold to fellow dentist, George H. Dougherty. Property was occupied by Dougherty family until 1953.
(Note: On index card Cumming also spelt as Cummings.)
Classified by National Trust.

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 172

Description: 

A two storeyed, single fronted house built in the style of a terrace house. The balcony and verandah have been removed.

History: 

"...some rooms had been divided with plaster board, and the original plain front had a balcony and underneath room added....We removed the balcony, and its underneath room, took down any room dividers, unstuck a revolting overmantel which topped a tiny grate....In one little room we eventually, through the cleaning down process, discovered some charming pine panelling.

Jolimont, Jolimont Street 078, 080

'Park Terrace' consisted of 5 houses originally.
1871. MCC BR: Neil Hutton to build 5 houses for W. Murphy, corner Agnes Street.
1873. Occupants: James A. Devenish, Andrew Scott, Charles Bright, Alexander Cumming, John McA Wright.
1880. Wm. Murphy - owner. Each brick and 7 rooms. Occupiers - Mrs. Thompson, Miss Barlow, G.H. Fisher, S. Black, H. Keffel.
