East Melbourne, Gipps Street 118, Crathre House

Description: 

A large two storey cement rendered house in the Italianate style.

History: 

Pre-history: Before Crathre House was built there was another house on the site - a large wooden house known as The Bungalow. This house was owned by Henry Dyer as an investment property. He lived next door at 121 Powlett Street with his wife, Mary, and their children. He owned many other properties in the immediate vicinity.

East Melbourne, Gipps Street 173 - Burchett

Built 1860 by George Black for Charles James Hodgson. 2 Storey stone house of 8 rooms. thought to be the oldest surviving house in Gipps Street.
occupied 1862 by Frederick Haller and later in 1870 by Dr. John Singleton, doctor, social worker and reformer who later had his surgery in Clarendon Street.

1861. Richardson - owner. Clark - occupier. Geo. Clark was a builder, who worked in East Melbourne. Built 173 Gipps Street.
1862. Geo. Black - owner both cottages. Occupiers - Richard Beer and Phillip Nunn.

1861. Black - owner. Parnham and Garrett - occupiers of the houses.
1866. John McCrea - owner.
1870. R. Jack - owner.
1876c-1883. No.85 occupied by Hon. Peter Lalor. Hero of Eureka, Speaker of Victorian Parliament.
1977. No.85 occupied Mr. John Balmford.

1873. Occupants: James A. Devenish, Andrew Scott, Charles Bright, Alexander Cumming, John McA Wright.
1880. Wm. Murphy - owner. Each brick and 7 rooms. Occupiers - Mrs. Thompson, Miss Barlow, G.H. Fisher, S. Black, H. Keffel.
