Scan of original photograph printed on post card. Picture shows rear patio of Amorique with Henri Lamandé adjusting the front wheel of a shiny new Abingdon motorcycle. A kangaroo, with its back to the camera, is also studying this very fine machine.

Died due to War Service

With Remberance Day coming up it seems a fitting time to acknowledge one of East Melbourne’s many residents who enlisted to serve their King and Country in the Great War. Shown here is Henri Joseph Lamande, in one of the more diverting photos in our society’s collection. For him perhaps there was the added incentive to visit the land of his ancestors.

1853. MCC BR: Jacomb for self wood house.
1854. Name mentioned: Wilkinson, 10 rooms.
1861. Hy. Bridger - owner. Mrs. Sheils- occupier, she conducted Ladies School here for 15 yrs.
1863 and 1870. Names mentioned: F. Jacomb - owner. Mrs. Sheils - occupier.

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 115, Amorique

Description: 

A large weatherboard house with a cedar shingle roof (later covered by iron).

History: 

Robert Elwall Jacomb, the first owner of the house, was the official assignee. It was to him that an insolvent's assets were transfered, or assigned, for distribution to creditors. Jacomb built this house as an investment while he, himself, lived in Powlett Street. In 1861 Mrs.

Illustrated panel prepared by volunteers from the East Melbourne Historical Society as part of an exhibition,For King and Country, commemorating the centenary of the commencement of the First World War. It is one of 16 panels, each of which provides a life story, with relevant images, of men and women who served in the war and who had connection with East Melbourne or Jolimont.
