East Melbourne, Berry Street 026

Description: 

A simple 2 storey rendered terrace with moulded render dressings to openings. The side entry and attached porch is unusual. [i-Heritage database]

History: 

This house was built for Mrs Ellen d’Arcy Harvie by Peter Reid and completed in 1890. It was named Koolkuna.  Mrs Harvie was the daughter of Thomas Lang, a Ballarat seedsman.  In 1865 she had married William Harvie, also a Ballarat seedsman. In 1882 William died and Ellen was left as provider for her four children.

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 071, Ohain

Description: 

One of three similar double fronted houses, single storey to the street but with a two storey section at the rear.

History: 

The builder of the house and its first owner was Thomas Murray. The house was initially built with six rooms but by 1888 had increased to eight rooms. Murray owned the house until his death in 1892. According to the Inventory of Assets in the probate papers, as well as the eight rooms the house had a bathroom, pantry and outhouses and was let at £6.10.0 per month.

1854. Thos. Crawson to build for Geo. S.L. Robinson (first owner) 'Clarence Cottage' - 3 room iron house. Also: Alex McLaren to build brick cottage and additions.
1855. Richard Fitzgerald for T. Robinson a kitchen. Christy Esq of Queen Street - architect.
1861. Robinson - owner. Henry Torrens Moore - occupier to 1862. Large brick 2-storey.

East Melbourne, Hotham Street 099, Halloween

Description: 

Symmetrical, two storey, double fronted house with replacement verandah and balcony

History: 

In a Notice of Intent to Build dated 14 March, 1854 George Robinson gave notice of his intention to have builder, Thomas Crawson, erect a three room iron cottage. Robinson gave his address as Clarence Cottage, Fitzroy (Hotham) Street, and in the 1854 Rate Books a four room brick cottage appears under his name. This would indicate that the brick cottage pre-dates the iron one.
