Bland Holt and 19th century theatre
Newspaper clipping about the Break a Leg exhibition held at the City Museum in June 2009. Artefacts from 19th century theatre were on show. Amongst the theatre people represented was Bland Holt (1851-1942) who lived at Mere House, 176 Wellington Parade c.1904-c.1919. He was a flamboyant theatrical producer whose shows were spectacular if not entirely accurate in detail.

East Melbourne, Clarendon Street 060, Gnaroo
Large two storey brick house, with tiled roof, large verandahs and no chimneys
The house was built in 1912 for Charles Tait by builders, Morley & Whelan, to the design of architects, Klingender & Alsop. Table Talk gave a glowing account of its features: A new house which is being built in East Melbourne is causing quite a lot of comment because, apparently, it has no chimneys, and has such lovely balconies and verandahs.
Frederick Baker's gravestone
Newspaper clipping about tours of the Melbourne General Cemetery run by the National Trust of Victoria's senior historian, Celestina Sagazio. One of the graves mentioned and shown in a photograph is that of Frederick Baker, the opera singer known as Federici, and best known as the ghost who is said to haunt the Princess Theatre.

MURPHY, Agnes
Agnes Gillian Murphy was born in Ireland but that is as much as we know about her early life. She appears to have arrived in Melbourne about 1884 on a visit to her sister, Elizabeth (Lily), who was already living here. She was first employed transcribing legal documents but in 1885 managed to persuade Maurice Brodsky to take her on as a contributor to his new magazine, Table Tal
