Demolished houses

109 Albert Street, East Melbourne - Burnell

Colour photo shows house of unusual Moorish design.  It was built for John Speechley Gotch, newsagent and partner in Gordon and Gotch.  It was demolished in the 1960s to make way for expansion of the Freemasons Hospital.

Description: 

Two storey house, with verandah and balcony

History: 

 Robert McMicking, merchant, notified the council on 28 Dec 1857 that he would build a house for himself on Lot 5, Section 18. On 27 Feb 1868 new owner, Patrick Brady, announced that he would add four detached rooms to the house.

Photo of Fitzroy Terrace, Clarendon Street, East Melbourne shortly before it was demolished to make way for the Mercy Maternity Hospital, which has now become apartments known as 150 Clarendon Street.

A pencil sketch of Verona, on the  corner of Gipps and Clarendon Streets. It is viewed from the Fitzroy Gardens across Clarendon Street. The sketch is from an album of 24 sketches from around Melbourne and Victoria by K Kennedy and dated 1876. It is inscribed 'Mr Ramsden's East Melb from Melb' and signed K Kennedy.

Black and white photo of a large Victorian era house with elaborate timber verandah and balcony.

At the time the photo was taken the house was the home of Ormiston Ladies College.  Students and teachers are gathered on the verandah and balcony.

The original photos are mounted on foamcore board as part of an exhibition entitled 'A Picture of Diversity' which was held in 2004 by the East Melbourne Historical Society to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the East Melbourne Group. 

The photos were taken in 1989 by Bruce Trethowan who later created the presentation boards for the exhibition.
