Lt Gray's father was principal of Pesbyterian Ladies College, and he, himself, went to Scotch College, both in East Melbourne. Lt Gray was one of several hundred men and women from East Melbourne who served in the Great War. Mr Mathias believes Lt Gray was the secret lover of his grandmother Grace MacKenzie.
