People of East Melbourne
This is a list of biographies of residents of East Melbourne.
This project started to commemorate the soldiers and nurses who went to Europe to serve in World War 1. But it has grown from there to cover biographies of any and all residents of note.
Along with many of their fellow Australians people from East Melbourne flocked to enlist. Many were heroes. Many lost their lives or suffered horrific physical or mental injuries. At home family and friends worked, endured and suffered consequences that were sometimes terrible and persisted long after the war.
Major-General Michael O'Brien gave us a starting point with a list of East Melbourne people who served in WW1. He spoke to the Society in April 2013 to give us some context to the period and to help the EMHS prepare for its own commemorations of this most devastating period in our history.

McGREGOR, Malcolm John
Malcolm John McGregor was born on 19 June, 1886. His parents,were Alexander Malcolm McGregor and Elizabeth Lilian McGregor, nee Rutherford. He was the eldest of four children born to the couple: Malcolm (1886), then Ernest (1889-1917), Robert (1891-1891), and Beatrice (1893 -?).

McKENZIE, Kenneth Fraser
Kenneth Fraser McKenzie was the only living son of Mrs. Marjorie Jane Fraser McKenzie, a widow, and her late husband George Kenneth McKenzie. He was brother to seven sisters: Margaret, Lila, Flora,Sara, Jane. Another son, Daniel, had died at two years of age. Mrs. McKenzie and her daughters lived at 60 [now 82] Jolimont Street, Jolimont.

McKENZIE, Willliam Maurice
- William Maurice McKenzie aged 37 enlisted on th 17 August 1914 and joined the 2nd Infantry Brigade 6th Battalion AIEF with the SERN 26
- Attestation paper informs he was from Melbourne East, unmarried and unstated next of kin
- William was a Telephone Repairer being 5 feet 8 & 1/2 inches weighing 12 stone 9 ozs with blue eyes and dark hair

McKEON, Thomas
Thomas McKeon was a student of Divinity and living at Vermont, Victoria, when he enlisted for the war on 23 October, 19015. Born at Enniscorthy in Ireland, his enlistment application identified both parents as dead, and no siblings. For his next of kin, he gave his wife, Stella Agnes McKeon, nee Allen. Stella was a registered nurse and living at Mrs.

Bertha McKinnell (1879–1963) was the youngest of five children (four daughters, one son) born to Francis McKinnell (c1839–1904) and his wife Mary Ann (nee Donnolly/Donnelly) (c1843–1927).

Mary McKinnon (1885–1979) born in Marnoo, Victoria, the third of seven children born to Godfrey McKinnon (1847–1934) and his second wife Margaret (nee Patience) (c1851–1916).

McLAUCHLAN, William
William McLauchlan enlisted on 19 August, 1914. He was 26 years old, single and working as a tailor at 130 McKillop St., Geelong. He had been born in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland and cited 7 years military experience with the Black Watch (3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland) prior to coming to Australia. He was 5' 9" tall and by faith, Presbyterian.

McLEOD, George Reginald Arthur
George Reginald Albert McLeod was born in Northcote in May 1896 and enlisted to serve in the war in 1914, when he was just twenty years and three months old. His father, George Frederick McLeod, a civil servant,was then living at 'Airlie', 314 Albert St., East Melbourne with his wife Elizabth, nee Williams and Reg. gave this address as that of his next of kin.

McLEOD, Oswald Samuel
Oswald McLeod was the son of George Frederick McLeod and his wife, Elizabeth Derippe Williams.He was 18 years old when he enlisted and had to have the permission of his parents to sign up. At the time he enlisted, he was working on a farm at Elmore, Victoria, but had two years work with city retailers Foy and Gibson prior to this.

McMAHON, James Edward
James McMahon was 38 years and three months old when he enlisted on 17 October, 1916.He was born in Clunes, Victoria, the son of Patrick McMahon (1859-1914) and his wife Hannorah, nee Savage (1854-1904). He had one brother, John Ignatius McMahon, b. 1892.

McMILLAN, Ronald Malcolm
Ronald Mc Millan was the elder son of Malcolm Reginald Mc Millan and his wife Jane. They lived at 230 Clarendon St., East Melbourne, and he gave this as his home address. He was only nineteen years of age and working as a clerk when he enlisted on 17 August, 1914, virtually as soon as war had been declared. He was attached to the 6th Battalion AIF, part of the 2nd Brigade.

McNIVEN, Andrew
Andrew McNiven enlisted on 29 September, 1916. He was the son of David McNiven, Cheltenham House, Cheltenham, Victoria, and gave as his address 226 Clarendon St., East Melbourne. By trade, he was a draper, an occupation he maintained post-war. He was a single man, aged 31 and 11 months, 5' 4" tall, with grey eyes and brown hair. By religion, he belonged to the Church of England.

McPHERSON, John
John McPherson was working as a farm hand when he enlisted on 5 July, 1915. Born in Richmond, Victoria, he ws the son of John McPherson, a carpenter, and his late wife, Mary. Father and son were living at 20A Hotham St., East Melbourne in 1915. John gave his occupation on his enlistment form as 'labourer'.

McPHILLAMY, John Wallace
In 1895, James Wallace McPhillamy was born into a pioneering family near Albury, his father being John Sydney McPhillamy , a grazier, and mother Annie Mary Josephine Serong. At the time of his enlistment on 9 February, 1917, John was working as an Overseer, possibly on the family property. His father was deceased at this point.

McQUINN, Abbott Halford
Abott Halford John McQuinn joined up to the military on 29 June 1918. He claimed to be 21 years and 4 months old and born on 25 February 1897 in Sydney, though his birth was also recorded as Launceston, Tasmania in 1892. He was the son of John Jacob Wallace McQuinn and his wife Florence Evelyn, nee Abbott. Throughout his life, he used various versions of his name.

MEADOWS, Ernest
The 14th Battalion was formed in the last weeks of September, 1914. Its headquarters initially was at 178 Collins St., Melbourne, but on 1 October, the battalion was relocated to Broadmeadows, where the recruits were trained.

MEEHAN, Henry Francis
Henry Francis Meehan was born in Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England, the son of John Meehan and Mary Maize. He had four brothers, James, Joseph, Patrick and John, and two sisters Mary and Sarah Meehan. Of these, James, Mary and Joseph, all died young, while his father, John,died in 1906 and his mother in 1912.

Born in Colac, Victoria, Michael Meehan was the son of John and Ellen Corbett. When he enlisted on 6 May, 1916, he was already 36 years and three months old, a single man, working as a labourer. He was not a big man, only 5' 4" in height, with blue eyes and brown hair. By religion, he was a Roman Catholic.
