There were approximately 30,000 signatures. The petition was 260 metres long and 200mm wide. It was made of paper pasted to a material backing and rolled onto a cardboard tube.

Margaret McLean signed first (as "Mrs William McLean") followed by the wife of the Premier of Victoria Jane Munro (signing as Mrs James Munro).

The petition also played an important role in Federation, because in 1901 Australia became the first nation in the world to give women both the right to vote and the right to stand for Parliament.
