A pair of double fronted brick cottages

History: 

A pair of attached double-fronted houses built by Martin Hood for himself in 1862.  Hood was born in Ireland and was a devout member of the Irish Catholic community.  He joined the St Patrick’s Society from his first arrival and was its president on many occasions.  He was also a teetotaller making him an unexpected manager of a brewery.  [For further on Martin Hood’s life s

1885. MCC BR: Peter Hill for self two 2-storey houses.
1885. Name mentioned: Peter Hill. Brick, 6 rooms.
1887. First Rate Book entries: Peter Hill - owner. Each of brick, 8 rooms. Occupiers: No.92 P. Hill. No.94 Thos Kidd. No.96 Mrs. Jones.

Index card shows Nos.185-196. This should probably be 186-196. Church is on corner of Lansdowne Street.
1898 onwards, Chalmers Hall, Gipps Street West (Parliament Place) was used as the Greek Orthodox Church with Father Kantopolous as priest. (See East Melbourne history). Then in:

1906. MCC BR: Murray and Crow to build 5 cottages for self. Subsequently an additional 5 cottages.
Note1: 2 cottages were demolished at the eastern end of the row, to provide a driveway to St. John's Presbytery.
