Bessie Cornwell's drawing prize

Scan of inside cover of a copy of the Arabian Nights awarded to Bessie Cornwell for drawing in 1887 while she was a student at Claremont, 342 Albert Street, East Melbourne. The school ran for ten years between 1881 and 1891. The principal was Mrs W K Muir, the widow of Rev William Kennedy Muir who died in 1869, aged 27, after less than a year in Australia.

Description: 

Matching pair of two storey houses with verandahs below, no balcony.

History: 

340 Albert Street was built as a family home for Abraham Goldberg while its neighbour, 342, was an investment property, probably leased as a lodging house. Between 1881 and 1891 Mrs Muir ran the East Melbourne School at 342.

1862c. First Directory entry: John Omand, cabinet maker. In 1867 he was a partner in firm: Omand and Miller, corn factors of 60 Bridge Road, Richmond.
1862-91. Name mentioned: John Omand.
1892-1909. Alexander Swinton. During this time, 1902, house was rebuilt.
1902. MCC BR: R. McDonald, builder, for A. Swinton a 2-storey house. J.O. Muir - architect.

East Melbourne, Powlett Street 144, 146

Description: 

The Statement of Assets in the Probate Papers of Henry McGuigan describes the houses as, "Two two storey stone houses and brick stable containing one stall and carriage shed."

History: 

The two houses were built for Henry McGuigan who lived in one, No. 146, until 1882 when he moved to Hawthorn, although, curiously, he continues to be listed as the occupier. He continued to own the houses until his death in 1891. No. 144 was tenanted. In 1872 Mrs. Henry McGuigan gave birth to a son at her residence, Glenullin House, Powlett Street, East Melboune.

It is one of 16 panels, each of which provides a life story, with relevant images, of men and women who served in the war and who had connection with East Melbourne or Jolimont.
