English author, Douglas Johnstone, tells the story of his research and discoveries concerning the life of his grandfather, Australian Thomas Johnstone.  Johnstone snr fought in WW1 with the 8th Battalion.  He met and married his wife in England and had children, but wanted to return to Australia, and contact with the English family was broken.  The family has no connection to East Melbourne but the story is similar to many of East Melbourne's soldiers as related in our 'WW1 people' database and gives an added dimension to the personal stories and problems faced by many of our service men and women.
Includes letter to the East Melbourne Historical Society from the author, explaining the back ground and giving a synopsis of the book.
